Love this and thanks for the invitation Charlie. I’ve answered. I think that most weeks I could read 3 but actually I often need a visual break or for posts to be shorter... I’m sure that’s personal though and depends on the time of day I’m reading. Love all you do.
Yeah I've thought the same, I think I still equate length with value! Which of course, isn't always true. I've been thinking about doing some more visual posts with pictures and whatnot, so watch this space for that...
I want to travel slowly in Europe. I want to be able to spend very little on hotels and food and yet still be comfortable. I am looking for more information about how you move from place to place and handle these expenses. How do you decide where to stay in towns you have no experience with? I understand that having a kitchen and cooking meals is the way to go, but we still have to know how to get to markets and what is located where.
This is a very good subject, one I have a LOT of experience in. It's given me food for thought about some new guides on slow travel. Watch this space... and thanks for the inspiration!
So I am not Buddhist, or Christian or any religion necessarily, but I have been reading this book called Think Like a Monk. I've noticed that most of Monk and Minimalism align. They don't let possessions own them and they own very little. It has inspired me. Maybe write about living in the present . How less distractions can open your eyes. I notice things I have never noticed before that I go by every single day. I value my time more. I also eat healthier, take care of myself a lot more. Finances are better, my happiness is at an all time high. I even do things out of my comfort zone that I wouldn't have normally done in the past. Anyways, I guess what I'm trying to say is that you could possibly tell everyone about all the benefits that aren't typically spoken about.
I really like the capsule pantry concept and would be interested in more general principles. Your actual recipes haven't been so helpful for me because of my particular food constraints, but like I said, I like the principle and would like to pare down my own kitchen more. Love your essays.
Hi Calby, understood. Yes this is something I've been thinking about doing more of, perhaps a list of rules you can break and rules you can't (and what to do if you can't). Thanks for the idea - it's going on the list
BTW I have really been enjoying your posts - I even subscribed (something I never do :-P ) AND ended up with a medium subscription as well! Great to have a fresh outlook. I love minimalism and simple living and your posts encourage me.
Hey Miranada, thanks for the comment! So the Substack model is that you subscribe to each Substack you're interested in individually - if you subscribe to me, it's only me, not anyone else.
With regards to the price, the minimum Substack allows me to charge my subscribers $5 a month which is what I usually charge (that's for access to everything I write in the future as well as everything in the archives) - although it does allow me to set occasional discounts which is what I'm doing at the moment with the link above. Hope that makes it a bit clearer. Thanks!
Oh OK, I didn't realise that! Substack keep sending me emails about other people's pieces as well so I thought it was like Medium where you can see everything by everyone.
$35 a year is still quite a lot though sorry, especially with inflation, energy prices etc. at the moment. I could buy several books on the subject for that. I do love your writing, and I realise you need to make a living, but right now I can't justify subscribing.
I’m new here. Found this page thanks to Brent and Michael are going places. I have no suggestions yet. I’m looking forward to reading more, and your community of readers have great ideas.
Now you are speaking my language. I am not trying to change what you or how you do it, because I like your style. Hope I can give ideas on untouched subjects that maybe others want to hear as well. I am up to my eyeballs in complex rules. I am so happy you have found a place you would consider a residency and look forward to hearing where that is and how you got there.
This might be something I write about over on Medium as well (and I give S+S readers paywall-free versions of my Medium stories) once it's done, which should be about mid-July
I read a lot, but only about things I currently want to do, things that help move me closer to my goals, which is moving out of the US and living in another country. (Not traveling, just one move) But with that, I want straightforward information on how to do it that gives direct answers, without having to sift through too much fluff. I want money figures, visa/citizenship info, proof of how it can work.. not just to be told it does. I believe there will be a time where I do a paid subscription with you, as I love your ideas on travel, minimalism, recipes, and your humor.. You are like talking with a friend. But (right now) I need someone that can tell me the steps 1, 2, 3+ to get there. Then I can read for pleasure and at leisure.
Hey Amber thanks for the feedback. I'm actually about to start the process of residency in a new country, so I may have some very detailed information on that process in the near future. It's very complex and of course everyone has different experiences and situations (and every country naturally has its own often highly complex rules about what you can and cannot do).
Perhaps this could be something I can write about more - it's going on this list. Thanks! And thanks for the kind words :-)
Hi, Charlie. I subscribe to a number of Substacks and Medium writers' posts, such that my inbox is over 600 items again... Twice a week is good for me. Your simple and minimalist ideas and inspirations are the reason I read Simple and Straightforward. Thanks for all the work you put into it, and I will consider a paid sub at $35/year.
Hi, I’m trying to get the one year subscription for 30% off but I’m not getting an confirmation that it went through. Can the problem be that I already have a monthly subscription, so I need to end that first?
Hey Gunn, do you want to send me an email at charliebrownwriter@gmail.com with your email address and I'll check your subscription in the back end. Yes it might be that you have to cancel first then re-apply (I'll make sure you get the discount one way or another!)

This is great Shawn! I must put the book on my reading list. Thanks for the comment

Brilliant stuff! Pleased to have you on board :-)
I would like a less expensive way to subscribe to just your pieces. I don’t want the whole of Substack, I just want yours.
