Inspriational. Thank you for sharing, esp the part about how reading much online materail makes us feel healthier, happier etc. I am moving this direction a little bit each day. Thank you!
I agree with everything you’ve written. I used to like getting to the end of my Substack inbox and thinking “that’s it for the day now, I can ‘log off’ the internet”.
After Notes, I subscribed to so many new writers that I haven’t been at the end of my inbox, and I’m not sure I like it. It feels like I have a job still outstanding. I love the writers that I originally subscribed to and want to read their posts, and interact with them and support them fully. But I just don’t feel like I can now.
All of this resonates with me a great deal. Even though the Internet has brought me some good friends and information, I am striving to limit the time I spend there. (Here?)
"Enough" is a tough concept to implement in an abundant society!
One thing I really appreciate about the Hey email service is their implementation of the "Feed," which allows email newsletters to simply float on by if you don't get around to reading them. It's such a liberating feeling to just have it pass by, like a particular set of water molecules in a stream, knowing that more will fill its place but I probably won't miss a thing. And since you never saw a full folder or had to click "mark as read" there's no sense of FOMO, since well, those things sorta didn't exist since you never went to look at them.
I definitely went down a 'subscribe spiral' when I first got on Substack. I was so excited to see all these amazing writers here, and just subscribed to everyone. It overwhelmed me and my inbox and I realized I can appreciate these incredible writers and support them even when not subscribing (by commenting, sharing, liking, etc.). I loved this piece, thank you for sharing!
Thanks Hunter! Yeah there are so many good writers, it's hard to choose who to follow. I think it gets easier with time once you realize who you're reading and who you're not
Am I the only person on here who would like a tip jar option? I understand the need to offer more to paid subscribers, but as a reader I sometimes want to support writers without receiving more to read in return!
Back in high school (My pronouns are "OK" and "Boomer") I was told I would be constantly learning for the rest of my life. Not what a restless teen wanted to hear, but sure enough it was prophetic. The Internet is a firehose of information, and Substack is an ocean. I've just about maxed out my budget of both time and money for subscriptions. It would be great if the Substack app had an AI feature that would summarize a long article.
I am relatively new here. After a week of mostly subscribing and reading, I am now beginning to curate down my list of subscriptions, while still looking for new ones, for the reason you have put into words so well.
Thank you for this. As a Substack newbie I started out wanting to subscribe to all the things. I've slowed down a bit now as I've realised I can't possibly read everything. I'm trying to find what works for me and hopefully I find a happy balance
There are many wonderful Substacks. We can’t read all of them, so selecting the right ones according to our time is essential. There are some writers that I might read some but not all of their articles. I stay subscribed because of the articles I am interested in.
Two weeks into Notes I feel this one all too much.
I know, right??!

I think it definitely can if we look for it in the right places - like Substack!

Thank you for this post 🤍
I know how you feel with trying to get to the end of your inbox!

I'm striving for this too. It's not easy, there is just so much good stuff to read and do out there!

Good idea. I keep a close eye on mine but I'm always on the lookout for new stuff

Welcome to Substack! It's a great place, to be sure
