You're 100% right about government zoning. It took Seattle years just to approve adding mother-in-law apartments. Sheesh.

We've often viewed the smaller places we've stayed in Europe as a version of tiny homes. Sure, your personal living space is tiny, but then you've got an entire city as your kitchen, living room, and backyard.

Very true - I like that approach

Check out Incredible Tiny Homes on YouTube! I was able to move from Vancouver Washington to Newport Tennessee. Randy Jones is the owner of ITH out here. I bought a 10x20 tiny home in one of his communities. The community is called The Grove and has 72 lots being built. This community sold out within a month’s time. He has also built other communities, The Forest, The Beach and the Prairie. How it worked out in The Grove was for a lot (Which is leased) and you buy one of his homes to put on the lot. The first two years your lease is free and after the two years it’s only $200 a month after that for the rest of the time living there. You pay for water, electric and any television internet connection you get on your own. He even sells what he calls an incred-I-box, sizes are 8x16 ($20,000) or 8x20 ($25,000) which is equipped with a bathroom (toilet and shower) kitchen with sink and butcher block countertop, as well as a complete off grid package you can add to any of his homes. He is in the process of building more communities. Just go to his website incredibletinyhomes.com for other information. He is helping out those with needing affordable housing and his prices and workmanship on his tiny homes beat competitors prices by far.

That is very cool, I'll definitely check him out. America seems to lead the way in tiny homes, they're not such a think back in the UK, but hopefully one day they will be!

I agree about tiny houses. More difficulties than advantages at the moment. Some people in Canada are trying to do something about that, so that disabled veterans and other disadvantaged people can have warm, dry, secure housing - the foundation we all need to build lives.

This really is a global problem — at least in the Western world. In the U.S. there’s a chronic housing shortage and an extreme shortage of affordable housing. Tiny homes could help to address this issue, but as you describe so well it’s extremely difficult and often impossible to built them.

It’s not just that housing is more expensive than it needs to be, but the cost of housing is one of the primary drivers of homelessness.

You can blame bureaucrats or “the government” but the reality is they’re doing what citizens, primarily homeowners, want which is too make it impossible for more housing and in particular denser housing to be built. “Not in My Back Yard.”

Someone told me that Home Depot is starting to sell Tiny Homes. I think with the current economy & what it’s about to turn into...a lot more people will be using tiny homes as starter homes. Starter homes are almost nonexistent anymore. All the houses built are 3/4/5 bedrooms now.

I’ve always wanted a tiny home, but like you said, the cost adds up so fast and they’re just...expensive

That's interesting, so you can buy a ready-made one? Pretty cool!

I have to look into to it to see how they’re doing it!

Just looked! They range anywhere from 14k-66k and are tiny home kits. There’s one for 47k that is the size of my current house minus our garage!
